- A colleague had the opportunity to go to North Carolina this week and pick me up eight (8) liters of sweet, sweet Cheerwine. I fell in love with this stuff (bottled by the fine folks at Carolina Beverage) many years ago on the way to Dragon*Con down in Atlanta. My Southern friends were surprised I'd never encountered it before; I was surprised it doesn't have wider distribution. Although that situation may be changing, as evidenced by this map of availability by locale. So, I can stock up next time I'm in Terre Haute, too.

- Even in the Turkish press, coverage of the bombing at an internet cafe has been pushed aside by coverage of... the internet itself. Presumably, no one has died and we can go back to our lives.

- A bomb went off at a police-frequented internet cafe in Istanbul about an hour-and-a-half ago. Thank God I can still get the Turkish newspapers off the net, because who knows when CNN is going to bother getting the rest of the details. I was around for the November bombings in 2003, so I'm a little keyed up now.

- The Sisters of Mercy will be coming to DC next month, as will My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult-- both of them required listening. At this point in my life, the question is no longer, "Can I afford tickets?" but, "Can I afford the time?" I'm a night person by inclination, but I still need my seven hours of sleep. Even in my glory days of youth, all-night concert going was followed by all-day hibernation. I can't rock out to Andrew Eldritch until three and then show up four hours later to approve timesheets. I have no sick leave or vacation time to call in. This dilemma calls for creative scheduling...

- I went to DC's Chinatown on Sunday to see the parade for the lunar new year (Year of the Dog, for those of you keeping score). I got to see Mayor Anthony Williams speak for the first time and last; he'll be leaving office soon. The Chinese restaurants were hopelessly packed, so I went to a Thai restaurant. If there's something in Thai cuisine better than larb gai and pork ka pow, I don't know what it is.

- Forgive this indulgence, but once again bad weather brought me a "moment." I had free time this morning, and under lead grey skies I stood and watched an empty fountain fill up with rain while I listened to Clan of Xymox singing "Louise." Soulful. And then I had a sausage-egg-and-cheese biscuit.

- I'm finally caught up on the back issues of Serenity Rose (see the Links section of this site). It looks like the typical Slave Labor Graphics publication at first, but there's something different about it. It could be the deep, crowded panels. It could be the pencil-laden atmospherics. A second or third reading will reveal more, I hope.

- After glutting myself on flash animation over at Newgrounds (and even the blamimation stuff they're doing at PVP), I've once again gotten the urge to experiment with moving pictures of Alas. Fortunately, that urge is quelled by my total lack of flash skillz (or even software, at the moment). It might be time for a new animated gif, however.

- The folks next door have started rennovating. I'd like to complain about the noise, but the place is a shell, and what are they gonna do? Not fix it? Instead, I merely wish them God speed and an early completion date.

- At last-- German synth industrial music has merged with nerdcore rap in an opus of "Nightmare on My Street"-parody proportions. I've been looking for a song to dislodge "The Ultimate Showdown" from my ears, and Rappers We Crush is just the ditty to fulfill that duty.
