- I feel like it's been months since I listened to my Cranes albums; I've got Loved on right now, and I'm rediscovering just how sweeping and beautiful "Come This Far" was. There's a new Robyn Hitchcock out there somewhere, too, which is a sign that, as Ben Franklin said, "God loves us, and wants us to be happy." MC Frontalot, of Penny Arcade associations, is coming to DC's Red and Black bar later this month. I've been looking for an excuse to head back to the Palace of Wonder's neck of the woods, but I suspect I'll be in Boston for a wedding at that time. A busy month, to be sure.

- New strips! New strips for Halloween! There will be updates all next week (and hopefully thereafter). I'm off to see the Gopher this weekend, and with strips in the queue I can face him with a clean conscience.

- Today is the first anniversary of the day tropical storm Katrina received her name. Appropriately enough, DC's forecast for tonight is thunderstorms.

- Squirrels ate all the tomatoes in my garden (and by all, I mean two). Why would they do that? I didn't know that was even an option for squirrels. Wretched beasts.

- Reminder to myself: buy a new Sharpie, or waste precious Pilot ink drawing borders and gutters. Also: Final Fantasy XII coming out on Halloween (reconsider if I'll have time for grad school).

- I had a chance to visit the Canadian side of Lake Erie this last weekend. I had developed some strange opinions about Erie based on trips to Sandusky (and a spouse from Cleveland). Also, I grew up around Lake Michigan, which is kind of like being a Cubs fan over the Browns (yes, I know they're different sports). But really, Erie turned out to be absolutely beautiful. Or maybe I just really enjoyed having Canadian beer and Turkish hookah on the beach.

- Anniversary today, wedding in Canada this weekend ("Niagara Falls? Well, let it!"), dealing with the garden in between... gonna be a light week for Alas around here. Much as I've come to disapprove of the concept of filler art, I may have to toss some up here just to prove that I exist.

- Hot. It is hot. Africa hot. Only worse. I traveled the perimeter of the Etosha Salt Pan in Namibia, and I crossed the Kalahari Desert; yeah, that was hot, but it was comfortable. The dryness allowed us to just shed the perspiration and forget about it. This weather we're having in DC right now? The humidity causes your own sweat to pile up on you, like damp cat hair. It is the definition of nasty.

- At this point, Monday's strip is just going to be Wednesday's strip. Huzzah!

Monday, July 31, 2006 -- 08:02:25 AM
- The new strip will be posted this evening-- the weekend in Philly ran long.
