- "Daddy said, "Your mother's right/She's really up on things/Before we married, Mommy served in the WACs in the Phillipines...' " So sings the band Cheap Trick. Pretty close to true, save for a few degrees of longitude.

- I'm down to the last few sheets of my current drawing paper supply. I use plain cardstock which is sold in "half-reams," so it's kind of momentous to have reached the end of a batch. Come to think of it, my fancy-schmancy pens are running a little low too, but that shouldn't be a surprise when I use the black pen exclusively.

- I'm a Jon Stewart fan, but I actively avoided watching the Oscars this year. I just don't have a tolerance for pageantry anymore. My condolences go out to Darwin's Nightmare, which did not win the documentary category. Still, it's easy to see how photogenic penguins beat out non-photogenic pilots, fishermen, prostitutes, and glue-sniffers.

- I'm going to see Darwin's Nightmare tonight. Probably won't be as cheerful as, say, Mad Hot Ballroom. What I'm really holding out for is a certain up-coming Russian sci-fi/fantasy flick. Gotta polish (Polish?) up my pyccku for that one...

- Sing the Plaid Tongued Devils, "You'd circle spelling mistakes on a suicide note." To which I reply, "You bet I would."

- Tonight I'm going to see either a taping or a broadcast of Kojo Nnamdi's radio show. If you're unfamiliar, suffice it to say that he's one of the local NPR stars. I speak without irony when I say that the line to get in isn't prohibitively long.

- Okay, so one of my technically inclined friends called me on my misinformed information theory. But if you don't know the facts, my earlier musing still sounds kind of convincing, so I'm going to let the words stand as a tribute to the d20 Bluff check.

- Okay, so it took me a while to figure this out-- nobody warned me. In physical drawings, black objects are made of ink, or information. In screen pixels, black objects are pixels that haven't been turned on, or non-information. A physical drawing where I skimp on the ink and leave a lot of white space translates into a lot of information on screen, and a big file size. A physical drawing where I go all out and fill in everything but the highlights leaves a lot of black space on the screen, and a small file size. Small file size makes the server happy. The very laws of bandwidth are telling me to take Alas deeper into the shadows.

- Rediscovering the joys of Ministry's "Every Day is Halloween." I used to think it was just a better than average bit of 80s alternative synth, but there's something else going on there-- some layered glimmer of the industrial density that was to come. A little RevCo pre-echo in there, too. Yep, it's going into heavy rotation this weekend.
